Psalm 51:1
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
If there was one truth that could draw all Christians together, it would be this verse. In it, we have a confession, a declaration, and a plea. The writer, King David, confesses his sin, declares God to be both merciful and loving in the extreme, and asks for God to erase his sins.
Why would David think God would grant such a request? Christianity is built on the answer: not because of David’s righteousness, but because of God’s steadfast love and abundant mercy. God doesn’t barter your sin and forgiveness in order to secure your obedience. His love overwhelms your sin at the unspeakable cost of the death of His Son on the cross. Think slowly today about what makes Christianity different, and what makes your God so great.
Prayer prompt: Lord, let me gaze with a grateful heart at Your steadfast love and abundant mercy.
