One of my favorite games to play with our baby is “Knock Down the Tower.” I stack some blocks and let my son knock them down. Then I pretend to be shocked and tickle him. Lots of laughs and smiles, over and over again. But on a spiritual side, I can do something similar that is not so funny. First Thessalonians 5:11 says, “encourage one another and build one another up.” So I can build up my son with encouraging words: “Great job! I’m proud of you.” But the flip side is I can tear him down with angry words: “Cut it out! I’ve had it with you today!” Encouraging words build up. Angry words tear down. Unfortunately, I’m guilty of both. I need God’s help to be more consistently encouraging. As we follow Jesus, encouraging words should be woven into our parenting. And as we encourage, we participate in building them up into who God wants them to be.
